SPEEDBOX MINI

The SPEEDBOX MINI is a very high accuracy non-contact speed sensor that has been designed for professional automotive testing, as well as for other industrial and high-end motorsport applications. It outputs a low latency, non-interpolated speed measurement comprised of GPS and inertial data, combined using an adaptive filter for exceptional performance even in non-GPS ideal environments. Packaged in a high quality machined aluminium enclosure, it offers an extremely reliable design that is based on our years of racing experience. The high accuracy speed measurement is output in a variety of forms that are suitable for integration into most data logging and display systems - CAN, RS232, and a fully configurable digital pulse output are all provided as standard.

The SPEEDBOX MINI uses Race Technology's high accuracy 20Hz PurePhase GPS solution. It is optimized for speed measurement and outperforms even top of the range 'survey-grade' GPS receivers in this area. This unique GPS technology offers lower noise, lower latency and superior bandwidth to "GPS-only sensors". It is also far more resistant to drop outs. This means that it offers an ideal replacement/upgrade for “fifth wheel”, optical and GPS-only sensors in a wide variety of automotive testing applications. These applications include brake testing, chassis dynamics, accident reconstruction, tyre testing and stability management testing, to name but a few.

The SPEEDBOX MINI avoids the inaccuracies, wear and calibration requirements of devices such as wheel speed sensors, requiring only a good view of the sky to give a speed output that is far more accurate than a calibrated wheel speed sensor.

The SPEEDBOX MINI is based on the SPEEDBOX design but has a lower input supply range and no analogue input/outputs, which enables the unit to be made considerably smaller.

IMPORTANT: The SPEEDBOX MINI is only intended for testing off the highway and in a controlled environment. Every precaution should be taken to ensure that all equipment is properly secured in the car before proceeding with any test work. Test work must only be carried out after taking due consideration for safety.

Following section will detail the differences between the standard SPEEDBOX line of products and the SPEEDBOX MINI.

Key product differences

SPEEDBOX SPEEDBOX MINI
2x RS232 ports 1x RS232 port
4x ADC/DAC No ADC/DAC
9-30v input range 9-15v input range
Dimensions 199x135x43 Dimensions 160x111x27mm

The SPEEDBOX MINI uses the same configuration software as the SPEEDBOX.

The SPEEDBOX MINI is incredibly similar to the standard SPEEDBOX, but features the following differences:

  • Only available in standard / RTK / or INS versions. The IMU option is not available
  • The power supply input is 9-15V rather than the higher 9-30V voltage range of the standard unit
  • There are no analogue inputs or outputs
  • The unit is much smaller, with the complete unit measuring only 160 x 130 (including un-mated connectors) x 27mm
  • Lower cost than a standard SPEEDBOX unit
