Vehicle speed bmw e30 options?

Postby Insomnia- » Sun Jan 15, 2023 7:10 pm

Hey there,

I am setting up my dash 2 in the moment. I use it in my e30 Rallyecar.

I wanted to ask; what options do I have to get a vehicle speed signal on the D2?

Can I use the vehicle speed signal from the original instrument cluster? Can I use the existing abs sensor as a signal? Do I need to set up a race tech abs rpm sensor on the wheels?

Thanks in advance

Elias

Hello,

You will need an RPM conditioner for the RPM signal and a VRS Signal Conditioner if you wish to use the ABS sensor.

I already managed to display the engine speed rpm on the dash.
Are both options you gave me for the vehicle speed?
By using the vrs conditioner will the abs still work ? Do I connect it to an analogue channel or the seperate wheelspeed wire?

Thanks in advance

The VRS Signal Conditioner is only required for the vehicle speed signal. If you tee into the sensor wires the ABS will still work. The VRS Signal Conditioner output connects to the wheel speed input of the DASH2.

Given that rally cars will rarely have driven wheels at road speed (tire slip), and sometimes not even un-driven wheels, why not just use GPS?

In Germany, Rallye Cars need to be fully road legal. There is a special kind of registration we can use.
To get this legality we need a certain kind of „tüv“ therefore the cluster needs to have a display of vehicle speed that is NOT based on gps…

Already got my module today, gonna be wiring it up tomorrow. Is there anything that I need to adjust on dash2? Or is everything already set up before shipping it? What divide cable do i use? There is one said to be divided 2 and another one

You need to use the yellow wire output. This is configured to divide by 8, so will give 6 pulses per rev of your 48 tooth ABS ring. In the DASH2 config software you use this 6 pulse per rev information along with your tyre size to calibrate the speedometer.

Finally managed to wire everything up and set the settings to 6revs and my tire size.
Made a test drive up and down the street (aprox 15kmh) but got no speed shown. Everything stayed at 0kmh on the dash.
Any idea on what to try?
Could it be that the abs sensor needs a higher speed to send a signal of food enough quality?

Cheers

Today I noticed that the odometer went up to 000001
So the dash measured some kind of movement obviously. I think I’ll need to take it for a bigger spin on the street
