Power to DL1

Postby redmistracing » Wed Oct 11, 2006 8:56 am

Hi,

Just a quick question with regards to the power feed for a DL1 logger unit. Is it safe to turn on the unit before starting the engine (600cc GSXR Suzuki), or does it need to be isolated at this point to prevent back feed voltages damaging the unit?

Many thanks in advance.

G'day Tim,
The documentation says to only power the unit up after you have started the engine to avoid the problems you outlined. An alternative is to power the unit with a remote battery pack. See the website from dpcars.com for an example.

The problem we find on bikes is finding space for the battery pack, hence we use a remote switch or a tachometric relay that ony triggers when RPM is above 800RPM.
Remember to turn off the logging before you power down the bike!
Cheers,
Daniel.

Tim:

Unlikely you would damage the unit, but voltage sag on startup is likely to shut the logging down if it has started, so it is a good idea to do as Dan suggests.

With current firmware data loss / corruption with power interruption is rare, but it is still recommended to stop recording prior to power removal.
