How do I know the AX-22 Has a GPS Lock

I did a track day on saturday and logged the data runs to a CF card; the problem I have is the unit starts logging the data as soon as I select the continuous mode but sometimes I do not have a GPS lock at this point. How can I be sure the GPS has a lock before I start to log the data.

When the unit has power going to it but isn't switched on does it still acquire a GPS lock?

and lastly is it ok to insert a CF card with the unit switched on in continuous mode?
