Use of DL-1 for Indoor Karting

Postby GregAmy » Sun Mar 25, 2007 9:54 pm

I've been using a DL-1 for 2-3 years now in my club racing program; great stuff. Recently, over the winter, I've been playing with indoor karts. We've got a very good facility nearby with high-quality karts.

I'd like to get up to speed with "the fast guys" without having to buy thousands of laps like they've done. The obvious answer is data acquisition! Problem is, it's inside, thus no GPS.

How useful is the DL-1 and software when used without the GPS function? I've come to rely on it for many uses, such as lap timing and sector timing. But if I were to mount the DL-1 and not use it with GPS, how effective could I really be?

Next step is to get the kart track owner to install DGPS transmitters... - GA

Hey Greg!

I just got the DL1 and I am doing some research on how I wish to install it and make it easy to switch units with Jeff.

I got some questions to ask so I may give you a call.

Back on topic!

Very interesting thought on the karting... I would still think that looking at the G's, etc would add some value.

In my experience you have two hurdles to overcome to achieve your goal.

1) understanding exactly what the data means and how it can be used to improve your driving
2) putting what your learn from 1) into practice.

It can help to minimise track time, but it will never be a substitute.

Have fun :)

Right.

But does anyone have any direct experience with using the DL-1 without the GPS function, and if so, how useful is it in regards to indoor karting?

We really do not recommend the DL1 or any of our GPS based products for indoor use. You certainly can collect some info, including accelerometer data, w/o GPS, but functions such as mapping and lap / sector times will work poorly.
