vid4 quality

Postby DMKMM » Wed Mar 16, 2011 7:09 pm

Trying to get better video quality out of my video4. what im doing is, i have for cameras all being recorded at the same time. The video's them selves look pretty good, but the text is kind of pixulated, and hard to read.

ive tried moving the sliders (both) all they way up, half way down, lots of random places in the Recording config settings in the video 4 configuration tool, but it doesnt seem to make a difference? load a new config on the video4, record... same quality.

am i missing something?

were doing some bench testing and using the video 4 for recording it, after i get a dozen or so different videos. im planning on using adobe premier elements to do all of the editing and such. ocne i have a final project finished, i'll be burning it to DVD and it will be used in a presentation. i know how to export the finished video from adobe so there is no quality loss and keep the higher res and such. but i have to have quality videos going in before i can have a finished quality video. when its all said and done, this video will most likely be put up on like a 12' projector screen and viewed... (infront of some pretty important people) so quality is a def concern here.

ill use this video i found on youtube (MaxxUK video), so ill use it as an example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O39VW0D6SxA very crisp letters, very easy to read, very nice videos. And ill use this video as another example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlVspCwqEuM now whats the difference...? i understand that there may be some different settings... but what are those setting? not speficially... but where can i chnange the settings? i can play with it and figure out what i like... i just dont know where those settings are, where i thought they were didnt make any difference

i have two of the HD cameras, and 2 of the SD cameras. but like i said the camera's themselves seem to work fine, its the text that is all fuzzy.

and i might add, i have no concern for how big the files are or what ever, im shooting for quality here. (pun definately intended)

-thanks

Good question! I am also wondering how to get better video and overlay quality. Hopefully someone can give us some hints on this.

I don't know if this really has an impact on the overlay quality but I do the overlay after the recording in the video export in Analysis now. My Video4 only merges the pictures of the different cameras into one video stream.

Guys,

A few tips. Red txt looks 'orrible, now idea why but it does on any of these video+data overlay systems. Use Orange, Yellow, Green or Cyan, all look good.

I always do post-process data overlay, again not sure if this is any different just much more flexible (i..e if it don't look great you can change it).

You might also want to try different fonts.

YOu can see on here that the yellow font is very clear, as is the orange but the read is pixelated even with a larger font. I only used red is that it is the usual SILVERSTONE colour

Also note the quality clearness of the MPH indicator.

These were all a bit clearer originally. I crop and stretch my videos to get widescreen, like this.

Notice also the font for the laptime display, the font is 'Zero Threes BOLD' as is the MPH readout which works great for digital display and txt.

I've also used COURIER NEW BOLD for Digital Displays which works very well as it is NOT proportionally spaced.

Like this one :

I'm not sure if the underlying video has any effect but you should ALWAYS have the 'Interlaced' setting ticked in V4 Config->Configuration->Recording Configuration.

Also, if you want to add really impressive 'static' text consider adding it as a graphic, a bit like the Batelco logo on this video.

I'd record at 8,000Kbps then, or maybe even 10,000. I would then Export Video as High Quality MP4 (4,000) which is about equivalent to an 8,000Kbps MPEG2 (VD4) file.

If you do any cropping or resizing (I generally crop to around 720x460, then resize [with stretch[ to 1280x720) you need to increase the bitrate, If I am after the best quality at this size I would go 8,000 but hardly noticable from 6,000.

Vimeo generally does a better job of encodng HD video than Youtube (at this size and bitrate, Youtube & Vimeo treat as HD) but I can't see really there is an advantage going above 8k for 1280x720
