Can the dl1 be connected while starting engine?

Can the dl1 be connected while starting engine?
A guy tells me that it can´t because of the voltagechanges that happends. I have it connected to a mx5 right now and have it turned off while starting the engine.

I have used mine now for ~4 years and I plug it in in the morning and off in the evening. Then depending on car it is either on or off in the garage and cranking. Anyway, I didn't have any issues with it and I guess I used it more than average.
