USB Serial Port issue

I am having issues with Windows Vista reckonising my usb serial port adaptor, it keeps coming up with the message "The selected serial port seems to be locked by another application, or is otherwise unavailable".
I have tried using other ports but get the same message, is there something i am missing?

Not sure what you are doing w/ the port, but I have had similar issues. What has happened to me is an application (such as Monitor or Config) seemingly not releasing the port to another application unless the first app is actually shut down.

I get the same message with my Expresscard54 to serial adapter and it won't connect to the display or the logger
Would a usb-serial work??

what was the issue causing the problem.
